Scott A.Shane (1992) stated that “small firms are more innovative than large ones, and people in individualistic societies tend to prefer small firms, whereas those in collectivistic societies prefer large ones.”

We at Relesys believe that this can be challenged, as creativity can also be present under more structured and bureaucratic companies. Being a large company with a culture and a structure that have been established for a long time does not equal letting go of new ways of thinking. There are many examples of companies that have renewed themselves on an international scale and countless cases of huge co-operations that expands to new markets and increase their range of focuses.

Big or small, we believe that a percentage of the daily rutines and structure should allow employees to try out new things and ways of working. That doesn’t mean that everything they try is more efficient or better, but some of it might lead to improving the business. We are working with companies that are almost a hundred years old, and with more than 2000 employees worldwide, but still they tend to search for new ways of improving the way they work and communicate.

An important difference from 1992 and 2017 is the fact that we have better tools and we are all more connected through technology. Today you can easily communicate new ideas and new knowledge with your colleagues even if they are situated on the other side of the country or world.

Our app collaborations often start as a new idea from the HQ in an organisation, who see the potential in a tool for them to communicate faster, easier and more sufficient with their employees. After a while, when we test the reach and usage of the app, we find that the app evolves into its own life through the employees, who often use it as a tool for sharing ideas across stores and regions. We believe this nourishes creativity and grows ideas. So, keep on working with creativity and go against the theory.
