There’s been a lot of talk about whether bringing your own device into the office or work environment is a good investment. Mostly because in this day and age everyone seems to have better technology than what is lying around the usual office. Offices usually have the oldest models of computers, you know who you are still using windows 98, while employees are buying the newest brands and products for personal use. But the office’s outdated technology is not the biggest issue. The issue is the inevitability of technological advancements and how accustomed we are to using our own.


In 2020 there are predicted to be 2.8 billion smartphone users. That’s over 1/4th of the projected population having a smartphone. More millennials are joining the workforce, and with this influx, comes the increase of smartphones, newer laptops, and tablets. People don’t want to sit and use an old computer from 2005, or even 2010, when they just bought their own. They also feel attached to their computers and competent enough to take it home with them. A survey by intel (Asha, 2015) states many benefits of BYOD; The study stated that 28% of companies said BYOD improved efficiency and productivity, 22% stated it improved worker mobility, 17% of survey takers stated that it saved on investing in new machines. So why should a company pay and use outdated products when bringing your own device can increase engagement and motivation? Because companies are worried about the security risks that come along with Bring Your Own Device.


It’s true, the dangers are out there. By using your own device you are able to work in any corner of the world, however, this means you could be working on unsafe servers or at the mercy of thieves. If a smartphone holding sensitive material is stolen it can be used against the company. Even worse if you are using an unsafe network, malware or harmful viruses could cripple a company from within. Luckily, there is a way to limit the risks associated with BYOD. A company can implement different policies with rules of how to use your own device for work. A survey by SAANS (Asha, 2015) Analyst Program reported that 97% of organizations feel that policies for BYOD are important.


We won’t bore you with the different steps of implementing your own policy because every company requires different practices. The only thing we can do is explain how necessary these policies will become. The world is changing and every day newer and newer technology is becoming available. Inspire your own employees to take control. Bringing your own device will develop a sense of independence while sparing your company’s income.
